Creator Corner: Meet Missy!

Creator Corner: Meet Missy!

It’s National Sewing Month, and we are so excited to spotlight one of the amazing creators in our community, Missy from The Little Green Bean! Missy is an expert sewist, quilter, pattern creator, and the creative force behind The Little Green Bean, plus a proud DreamBox & DreamStation owner!

Her creativity, authenticity, and love for making inspire so many! What started as a hobby employs both Missy and her husband! We caught up with her to ask about her creative journey, favorite projects, and how the DreamBox helps her to stay inspired and organized. Keep reading to hear her story!

1. What first inspired you to pick up sewing, and how did that spark turn into The Little Green Bean?

I started sewing when I was young, took it in HIgh school, and picked it back up as a creative outlet when my kids were little. At first, it was just simple projects for something to do while recovering from knee surgery and I was using recycled burlap to make tote bags, then I started with Christmas stockings for the holidays. I had a customer ask if I could make her a matching tree skirt, which I had never made before, so I figured out how, added more to my website and they sold so well! That is where I started and what grew into The Little Green Bean, which has evolved over the years from handmade décor into what it is today: teaching, designing patterns, and building a creative community.

2. Where do you find inspiration for your patterns and projects?

Inspiration comes from everywhere—nature, home décor, a walk outside. Sometimes it’s the texture of a fabric, other times it’s a seasonal mood. I also listen closely to what my community is excited about or struggling with. If there’s a way I can design a project that’s approachable yet still feels special, that’s where the magic happens.

3. What has been one of your most rewarding moments as a sewing entrepreneur?

Seeing members of the Sewing Squad share their finished projects never gets old. The most rewarding moments are when someone tells me, “I never thought I could sew this, but I did.” Knowing that I’ve helped build confidence, not just skills, is the best part of what I do.

4. What advice would you give someone sewing for the first time?

Start small and don’t worry about being perfect. Pick a simple project that excites you, because finishing it will give you confidence to keep going. Mistakes are part of the process—they’re how we learn. And remember, every experienced sewist was a beginner once, too and we all still make mistakes. I use my seam ripper almost daily. It is just part of the process. I want people to know that mistakes are not a bad thing!

5. How has the DreamBox helped you create more?

The DreamBox has been a game-changer for me. It keeps all of my supplies organized and within reach, which saves me so much time. Instead of hunting for fabric, thread, or tools, I can sit down and start creating right away. Having a dedicated, functional space makes it easier to focus on the fun part: actually sewing.

6. What trends are you seeing in sewing right now that excite you?

I’m loving the renewed interest in scrap-friendly projects and sustainability. People are excited about using what they already have, making quilts and bags from leftovers, or repurposing old textiles. There’s also a surge of modern takes on traditional quilting, which I think makes sewing feel more approachable to a whole new generation.

7. If you could inspire readers to try one new sewing project this month, what would it be?

I’d encourage them to make a small bag or pouch. It’s a project you can finish in a weekend, it’s practical, and you’ll use it every day. Plus, it teaches skills like zippers, lining, and structure without being overwhelming.

8. What is the one sewing tool every beginner needs?

A good quality seam ripper. It may not sound glamorous, but it’s everyone's best friend. Mistakes happen, and having a reliable tool to fix them makes all the difference. It takes the fear out of trying new things when you know you can easily undo and redo.
